Meet Daira

Name: Daira
Age: 20
Country of Origin: Guatemala (Sololá)
Current Location: Houston, Texas
Goal: To complete ESL and begin studies in medical assisting
Need: $535 for Fall ESL tuition (September–December)

Daira is a determined young woman from Sololá, a rural village in the Guatemalan highlands. She is one of six siblings, five of whom now live in the United States. Raised by her grandmother after her mother moved to the U.S. when Daira was only two years old, she grew up in a place with few opportunities and no access to proper medical care. In 2019, she moved to Houston to live with her mother and stepfather, leaving behind one sibling in Guatemala.

Daira graduated from high school in the U.S., but her English is not yet strong enough for college-level coursework. Her family’s financial situation became more difficult after her stepfather was in a car accident. Without insurance, the medical bills and debts have been overwhelming. At home, Daira cares full-time for her 4-year-old nephew, whom she has raised since birth while her sister works. On weekends, despite living with chronic pain from a condition that left one hand and one leg shorter than the other, she works in a warehouse to earn a small income.

Her dream is to study medical assisting. Daira hopes to return to her village to help those who have no access to doctors, hospitals, or medicine. “When I was a child, we only had curanderos. If someone was sick, they had to walk hours to get help, sometimes they didn’t make it.”

Her mission is deeply personal. She never had access to a specialist or proper treatment for her condition, something she hopes to pursue in the future. Growing up, she also endured bullying and discrimination for being “different”. She does not drive or own a car, so another goal is to save enough money to gain transportation independence, which would open more opportunities for work and school.

A scholarship from Balance Foundation would give Daira the chance to improve her English, pursue higher education, and take the first steps toward her dream of providing medical care to her community.

“I want to be the doctor I never had. I want to return to my village and help children grow up without fear when they get sick.” – Daira

Meet Mariangeles Loaiza Leal

Name: Mariangeles Loaiza Leal
Age: 23
Country of Origin: Venezuela (Coro, Estado Falcón)
Current Location: Houston, Texas
Goal: To graduate from ESL and return to her career path in physical therapy
Need: $535 for Fall ESL tuition (September–December)

Mariangeles is a resilient 23-year-old who came to the U.S. two years ago with her father, leaving behind her mother, sister, grandparents, and nieces in Venezuela. Although her entire family dreams of being reunited, financial and other constraints have made that impossible. For now, Mariangeles supports them from a distance.

Back in Venezuela, she studied physical therapy for nearly four years and was just two months away from graduating when she had to leave. It was a painful decision, but she made it with hope and faith that she would find better opportunities in the U.S. Today, that dream is still alive, and she is determined to continue her studies and build a future in health and wellness.

Mariangeles currently works full-time in a cosmetics warehouse, where she and her father earn $14 an hour. The job is physically demanding lifting heavy boxes and pallets but she works hard to cover her own expenses, support her father, and send money home to Venezuela. Her grandfather recently suffered a pre-heart attack, and helping her family through such times motivates her even more.

Mariangeles and her father share one car, and her work and school schedules depend on his availability to drive her. A scholarship would allow her to save for a car, gain more independence, and focus on her studies. She dreams of completing the ESL program, resuming her career in physical therapy, and one day working in healthcare to give back to her community.

Your support could help Mariangeles reclaim her dream.

I left my career just two months before finishing. I came here with faith, strength, and the hope that this country will give me the chance to build something better for me and my family.” – Mariangeles Loaiza Leal.
